Why get a Chain Catcher?
Preventing chain drops:
Chain catchers are designed to catch the chain if it tries to fall off the inside of the chainrings, especially the smaller one. This is especially helpful on bikes with carbon fiber frames, where a dropped chain can cause significant damage.
Minimizing damage:
A dropped chain can get wedged between the chainring and the frame, potentially damaging the frame or even causing a crash. A chain catcher acts as a barrier, preventing this damage.
Riding in rough terrain:
Chain catchers are especially useful for mountain biking or gravel riding where bumps and uneven surfaces can cause the chain to bounce or shift, increasing the risk of a drop.
Shifting under load:
Shifting gears while pedaling hard (especially uphill) can also cause the chain to drop. A chain catcher can help prevent this.
Inexpensive and easy to install:
Chain catchers are relatively inexpensive and easy to install, making them a worthwhile investment for many cyclists.
Variety of designs:
Chain catchers come in different designs, including those that clamp onto the seat tube or attach to the front derailleur. Some derailleurs even have integrated chain catchers.
