The engineering you feel on the road

The achievement is fitting so much wheel into so little weight. The TLO 50 pairs a 50mm profile with a 32.5mm external width, giving a lightweight road build the proportions of a serious all-round wheelset.

That is an appealing combination for a ride that takes in climbs, fast group sections and rough country roads. Low mass matters uphill; the broad rim gives you room to build around modern road tyres.

The attraction is the complete package: low weight, a substantial rim and a ride worth getting out for. Rim depth alone does not establish an aerodynamic winner between these two wheels.

Independent testing backs the ride

BikeRadar awarded the TLO 50 4.5/5. Its Extralite test set weighed 977g with tubeless tape and valves fitted, and the review praised more than the number on the scales:

Schmolke’s individual carbon spokes can be tensioned and replaced by a suitably equipped wheel builder. That is a useful ownership benefit when you intend to put serious kilometres into an expensive wheelset.

MEILENSTEIN ART uses continuous rim-to-rim carbon spokes bonded into its structure. Schmolke’s threaded approach gives you a more conventional route to spoke maintenance.

The TLO 50 Extralite with black decals is $5,995 at Bspoke Velo. That is the 940g configuration used here. The DT Swiss 180 option has a different price and weight.
