At $4,699, it sits firmly within the premium wheel category. That also puts it just $676 below the Schmolke TLO 50 with DT Swiss 180 hubs.

The DT Swiss is 5mm deeper, but the Schmolke is nearly half a kilogram lighter, wider internally, considerably wider externally and built with carbon spokes rather than steel.

455g changes the character of the bike
The ARC 1100 55 is not excessively heavy by ordinary aero-wheel standards. The problem is that it is being compared with an extraordinary 50mm wheelset.
Removing 455g from the wheels has an immediate effect whenever speed changes. The bike requires less mass to be accelerated after a corner, on a changing gradient or when responding to another rider.

A wider platform for a premium modern road bike
DT Swiss increased the internal width of the latest ARC 1100 from 20mm to 22mm. That is an improvement, but it remains conservative compared with the 25mm internal platform of the TLO 50.
The difference is even larger externally. The DT Swiss measures approximately 28–28.5mm across the rim, while the TLO 50 measures 32.5mm.

Does the DT Swiss gain anything from being 5mm deeper?
The ARC 1100 is a 55mm wheelset, while the Schmolke is 50mm. DT Swiss has invested heavily in aerodynamic development, including its new V-shaped rim and Wheel Tyre System.
Rim depth alone, however, does not determine which wheelset will make a bike faster or better to ride. The DT Swiss carries another 455g despite having only 5mm of additional depth.
That additional rotating mass is present on every climb, every acceleration and every change of pace. Any aerodynamic comparison also depends heavily on tyre selection, wind angle, rider speed and the frame on which the wheels are fitted.
