Schmolke Carbon Screws are for riders who care about every last detail of the build. They offer impressive dynamic strength, a cleaner premium finish, and a meaningful weight saving over aluminium bolts in the right applications.

Schmolke states these screws are stronger and around 40% lighter than aluminium bolts. That makes them a smart option for carefully chosen low-load areas where shaving weight and refining the finish both matter.

Why use carbon screws?

Most bikes still carry plenty of ordinary hardware in places where a lighter, more considered solution makes sense. Carbon screws are one of those small upgrades that help bring the rest of the build into line with premium wheels, bars, saddles and finishing kit.

This is not a blanket replacement for every bolt on the bike. It is a targeted upgrade for riders who want to cut unnecessary weight in suitable locations without compromising on function.

Where Schmolke Carbon Screws can be used

These screws are suitable for a range of selected applications including bottle cages, headset adjustment screws for ahead caps, MTB brake levers and shifters, rear V-brakes, road brake pad fixing bolts, THM Clavicula bearing play adjustment, and selected front and rear derailleur screws.

Because fitment varies between brands and models, it is important to check the correct size before buying. In some cases, screws may need to be shortened to match the original hardware.

Assembly notes

Carbon screws do not need to be tightened as much as metal screws. Schmolke notes that they expand more when tightened and are less likely to work loose. They also generate less friction in the thread, which means the same internal tension can be achieved with less torque than a metal screw.

If you want to increase internal tension without increasing torque, grease can be added to the thread and to the underside of the screw head. Screws are tightened with a Torx 20 tool, with some versions also using a 7mm hexagonal head.

How to shorten carbon screws

Where required, Schmolke carbon screws can be shortened carefully to match the original bolt length. The method is straightforward, but it needs patience and the right approach.

Screw two nuts onto the screw and tighten them against each other. Clamp only using the nuts in a vice. Never clamp the carbon fibre screw itself. Use either a carbon saw blade or a new steel blade and take your time. Leave the screw about 1mm over length, then file it back square to the head using a type 3 file. Remove the first nut and check whether it follows the thread easily. If not, file the cut edge again before fitting.

Where they make the most sense

Schmolke Carbon Screws are ideal for riders building a lightweight road, gravel or MTB setup where every component has been chosen carefully. They are especially well suited to premium builds where standard hardware looks and feels like an afterthought.

If you are chasing a cleaner finish and sensible gram savings in the right places, this is the sort of upgrade that completes the bike properly.

Important usage limits

These screws must not be used everywhere. Schmolke specifically advises against using them for clamping a handlebar in the stem, for seatpost clamps, or for brake discs. They may be used for clamping shifter cables, but the screw heads can wear over time and may need replacing.

Use common sense. Saving weight is only worthwhile when the application is suitable and the screw is installed correctly.

What are Schmolke Carbon Screws made for?

They are designed for selected lightweight applications on performance bikes where reducing bolt weight makes sense. Typical uses include bottle cages, headset adjustment screws, selected derailleur screws, road brake pad bolts and some MTB controls.

Are Schmolke Carbon Screws lighter than aluminium bolts?

Yes. Schmolke states that their carbon screws are around 40% lighter than aluminium bolts, while also offering excellent dynamic strength in suitable applications.

Do carbon screws need the same torque as metal bolts?

No. Schmolke advises that carbon screws do not need to be tightened as much as metal screws. They expand more when tightened and create less thread friction, so lower torque can achieve the same internal tension.

Can Schmolke Carbon Screws be shortened?

Yes. They can be shortened carefully to match the original screw length. The screw should only be clamped via nuts in a vice, never directly on the carbon fibre, then cut and finished carefully with the correct tools.

Where should carbon screws not be used?

Do not use them for clamping a handlebar in a stem, for seatpost clamps, or for brake discs. Those are not appropriate applications for these screws.

Can I use these for bottle cages?

Yes. Bottle cages are one of the most common and suitable uses. In many cases this will require M5x20 screws, though some bottle cages may require a countersunk head instead.

Are Schmolke Carbon Screws suitable for derailleurs?

They can be used in selected front and rear derailleur positions, depending on the make and model. Because derailleur hardware varies, it is important to confirm the correct size before buying and shorten screws where needed to match the original dimensions.
