IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast distances
Swim: 1.9km
Bike: 90km
Run: 21.1km
That produces the famous 70.3-mile total. It is half the distance of a full IRONMAN, but completing the swim, bike and half marathon remains an enormous achievement.
IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast swim course
The 1.9km swim begins from Mooloolaba Beach. It is an open-water ocean swim, so conditions can vary with wind, swell and the movement of the tide.
Athletes should prepare for more than the distance. Practise sighting, swimming through broken water and maintaining a controlled rhythm when surrounded by other competitors. The age-group race uses a rolling start, helping spread swimmers across the opening section of the course.
IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast bike course
The 90km Sunshine Coast bike course starts from transition near Mooloolaba Beach before taking riders along the coast and towards the Sunshine Motorway.
IRONMAN promotes the course as flat and fast, but the bike leg is also classified as rolling. That is the more useful way to think about it. This is not a mountainous course, but it is not 90km of perfectly flat, uninterrupted riding either.
There is an early climb away from the coastal section, gradual changes in elevation, turnarounds and periods where riders must rebuild speed. Once on the faster motorway sections, the ability to hold an aerodynamic position and maintain momentum becomes critical.
The Sunshine Coast bike leg rewards complete speed.
You need aerodynamics for the fast sections, low weight for the rolling terrain and a clean cockpit that lets you stay in position for the full 90km.
The biggest mistake is attacking every rise and then trying to recover on the other side. Ride the rolling sections with controlled power, use the descents to restore speed and avoid repeatedly surging well above your target effort.
Your real target is not simply the fastest possible 90km split. It is the fastest bike split that still leaves you capable of running a strong half marathon.
IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast run course
The 21.1km run is completed over two laps around Mooloolaba and the Esplanade. It is a spectator-friendly course with substantial crowd support close to the beachfront.
Parts of the run are fast, but there are enough changes in elevation to expose a rider who has overcooked the bike. Starting the run under control is vital. Let your legs settle, manage the conditions and build the pace once you know what you have left.
The best bike upgrades for IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast
Sunshine Coast is exactly the type of triathlon where better equipment can produce a measurable result. The 90km bike leg is long enough for small improvements in aerodynamics, position, weight and usability to accumulate.
1. Use a wheelset that is aero and genuinely light
Deep wheels help on the exposed, high-speed sections of the Sunshine Coast bike course. The usual compromise is weight. Many deep carbon wheelsets become noticeably heavy when the course begins rolling or speed drops through a turnaround.
Schmolke TLO 50
The Schmolke TLO 50 combines a 50mm aero rim with a complete wheelset weight starting from approximately 940g with Extralite or NONPLUS hubs.
You get the depth to hold speed across the motorway and coastal sections, without dragging a heavy wheelset over every rise. Carbon spokes give the bike a direct, responsive feel whenever you accelerate back to race pace.
Shop the Schmolke TLO 50 WheelsetFor riders who want one premium wheelset for triathlon, road racing and everyday fast riding, the TLO 50 makes far more sense than a heavy, race-only setup.
2. Put your computer where you can read it
Pacing matters over 90km. If your Garmin or Wahoo is buried between your arms, you will repeatedly move your head or leave the aero position to check power, heart rate, speed, distance and nutrition alerts.
The 76 Projects TT Modular Computer Mount 3.0 positions your computer securely between the aero extensions with three-way adjustment.
If your forearms hide the screen, the 76 Projects TT Tower Mount raises the computer above your arms, giving you a clearer view without forcing unnecessary head movement.
3. Shift without leaving the aero extensions
Rolling terrain creates frequent gear changes. If the controls are not positioned around your natural hand placement, every shift can interrupt your rhythm or force you out of your strongest aero position.
76 Projects makes dedicated aero-extension shifter mounts for SRAM shifters and Shimano satellite shifters. They let you position the controls where your fingers naturally sit, making it easier to change gear without breaking position.
4. Use a saddle designed for a forward position
A road saddle is designed around a different pelvic position. When you rotate forward on a triathlon bike, more weight moves towards the nose. A conventional narrow nose can become uncomfortable long before the end of the Sunshine Coast bike leg.
The Gelu P-Series Carbon Saddle uses a 54mm front support area specifically suited to TT, triathlon and aggressive forward positions. The P3 starts from approximately 60g, while the stronger P1 is approximately 70g.
5. Remove rotating weight with TPU tubes
If you race with inner tubes, replacing conventional butyl tubes is one of the easiest ways to remove weight from the outside of the wheels.
The Revoloop Race and Race Ultra TPU Tubes weigh approximately 39g and 25g respectively. They reduce rotating weight and pack down extremely small, making them useful both as race tubes and compact spares.
6. Keep hydration secure without unnecessary weight
Hydration cannot be an afterthought over 90km. Bottle cages need enough retention to handle rough surfaces, turns and repeated bottle removal without adding bulky hardware to the bike.
The handmade Alpitude Superleggero Carbon Bottle Cage weighs approximately 9g. It gives you secure bottle storage while removing almost all the weight of a conventional cage.
7. Clean up the rear of the bike
The 76 Projects Saddle Rail Mount positions compatible Garmin Varia units, cameras and lights securely beneath the saddle. It fits round and oval rails up to 7x10mm and weighs 32g including fasteners.

When should you make your bike upgrades?
The right time to improve your setup is during training, not on the Saturday before the race.
A computer mount, shifter mount, bottle cage or saddle rail mount can normally be installed and tested without fundamentally changing your bike fit.
A new saddle, wheelset, tyre system or major cockpit change needs more time. Fit it properly, ride it outside, test it at race intensity and make sure it works with your hydration and nutrition plan.
